"Know where you are. Know where you're going. Know how to get there."

Both the PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT help students understand where they are academically, but the junior year PSAT scores have the added bonus of being used for the National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test, a test that can increase a student's chance of admission and scholarships.

Using the PSAT/SAT Score Correlation Chart, students can see exactly where they are, what colleges they might currently get into, and the amount of work outside of class they would need to put in to reach their college and career goals*. (NOTE: Students hoping to get into an elite college should understand that those colleges want students who push themselves and take control of their own education. You can click here to read about what elite colleges want in their own words.)

*Since students in grades K-7 don't take the PSAT or PSAT 8/9, they should use their CAASPP scores to understand their percentile level and if they're on track to meet their college and career goals.

Depending on where students are and where they want to go, they can use the chart below to see how much work they'll need to do--above and beyond what they're currently doing.
