English and Math Study Resources
Regardless of the career your child chooses later, doing well in math and English will give them more options and opportunities to choose from when they graduate and will make reaching their college and career goals easier.  The more options your child wants, the more work they will need to do above and beyond what their teachers require—starting now.

Students should spend part of the year mastering* everything they didn't master during previous years, getting ahead, or digging deep into an academic area they really enjoy. (NOTE: Students in 3rd, 5th or 8th grade should focus most of their time on math.)

Reading: Advanced Readers
Students who can read independently should read from a wide variety of materials, both fiction and non-fiction (including science, art, history, biography and autobiography). In addition, as students get older, they should focus less on what a writer is communicating and more on how a writer is communicating, the rhetorical techniques a writer uses to make an impact on their audience, looking ahead to the reading skills they will need to be fully college and career ready. (For a deeper understanding of the reading skills your child will need later, read the AP Language and Composition overview, the AP Literature and Composition overview and the IB English A: Language and Literature overview.)

*How can you tell if your child has mastered something? They will miss few or no questions, make few or no mistakes, and produce a high-quality product almost every time. Mastery takes a lot of work, but also produces a lot of pride and satisfaction.
