Applications: Preparing for the University--Level III

The Basics of College Applications

Although there are some differences, most college applications ask for the same basic information. Students and parents should make sure they have this information available for both students and parents before they begin filling out a college application:

Email address
-- Addresses (home, work, school)
-- Parent education (college name, degree, year graduated)
-- Sibling education (college name, degree,  year graduated)
-- Social security or SSID (California Statewide Student Identifier) number
-- Citizenship/residency information (including dates and locations)
-- Application dates/deadlines
-- Future academic and career plans, including major (if decided)
-- Student transcripts (high school, college)
-- Test scores (SAT/ACT/AP/IB)
-- Current class schedule
-- Extracurricular activities and work experience, including addresses, phone numbers and name of supervisor
-- Academic awards or honors
-- Essays/personal statements

 Make sure to write down all email and account log in information required to sign in and to complete the application. MAKE AND KEEP BACK-UP COPIES--especially the email log-in information.

The Community College Application

To apply to a California Community College, students will need to create an OpenCCC account.

The UC Personal Insight Questions
As with most personal essays, focus on what your application doesn't cover, mainly who you are, the person behind the grades and test scores and classes. Focus especially on demonstrating that you're motivated, intelligent, helpful, kind.
