The sixth annual Community Gathering for Excellence will bring together about 1,000 people representing all San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) stakeholder groups to evaluate the progress SBCUSD has made toward graduating healthy, educated students who are ready and able to compete in tomorrow’s job market.

Gathering participants will hear directly from SBCUSD students about their challenges and successes and how educators can make a difference in children’s lives. SBCUSD officials will also share the hurdles facing the District and its accomplishments since developing the Community Engagement Plan five years ago.

San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden launched the Gathering for Excellence in 2012 as one way to engage parents, employees, and community members in meaningful dialogue about local educational reforms. Dr. Marsden’s efforts to involve all stakeholders resulted in the creation of the Community Engagement Plan, a nine-point plan that laid out changes and improvements to the District’s educational and social systems in order to better prepare students for the future and, as a result, revitalize the community.

In honor of the five-year anniversary of the Community Engagement Plan, one of the gathering’s main activities will ask attendees to provide direction on where the District needs to focus its efforts going forward. Gathering attendees are invited, but not required, to review the plan before November 9 by visiting www.sbcusd.com/CEP.

Spots at the Community Gathering for Excellence, to be held at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, are still available for members of the community. Attendance is free, but you must register by November 8 at https://www.eventbrite.com/o/san-bernardino-city-unified-school-district-8461393025. Doors open at 8 a.m. on November 9 for breakfast. The program is from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
