State data released yesterday shows the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) high school graduation rate increased to 93.6 percent for the Class of 2019, continuing a notable, five-year upward trend, according to the California Department of Education.
The District’s new graduation rate grew by 1.7 percent to reach an all-time high. And an increasing number of high school seniors who earned a diploma from SBCUSD graduated ready to enter college and succeed in the workplace.
Helping more students graduate in four years is partly attributed to the Board of Education’s focus on removing barriers that stand in the way of student learning and the effectiveness of the District’s Community Engagement Plan 2.0.
Now in its second phase, the strategic plan calls for giving students greater opportunities to learn beyond the boundaries of the classroom, the clock, and the calendar. The plan also highlights the need to develop meaningful partnerships that promote the success of all students.
The District offers various programs for students who are not on track to graduate, including two award-winning continuation high schools, an online credit recovery program, and summer school.
Seeing the District’s graduation rate jump to 93.6 percent is one of the greatest accomplishments under Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden’s leadership.
“For an urban school district like ours, helping more students graduate is paramount to improving our community’s economic vitality,” Marsden said. “And, knowing that SBCUSD is preparing more and more students for high-demand, high-paying jobs makes me so proud.”
