Join the School District Literacy Task Force to Make Hope Happen for Students and the Community
“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty.…Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.”
Those were the words of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan. And it is a sentiment shared by the San Bernardino City Unified School District’s (SBCUSD) Elementary Instruction department, which is launching a Literacy Task Force to build awareness around the importance of literacy in our community.
The kickoff event is Monday, September 16, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the SBCUSD Professional Development Center, 4030 Georgia Blvd. The public is invited to learn about the task force and the District’s literacy campaign.
“We would love to have volunteers from all parts of the community—parents, business leaders, educators, just anyone—who value literacy and understand that it is the key to success, not just for individual students in school, but for our entire community,” said Elementary Instruction Director Tasha Lindsay Doizan.
The literacy campaign had a soft launch last school year when Doizan invited students to submit their ideas for the campaign slogan. The winner was Paakuma’ K-8 student Jonathan Lara, who submitted the slogan Reading is Dreaming With Your Eyes Open. The full campaign will be rolling out over the course of the school year.
