SBCUSD starts its second semester on January 11, 2021

Monday, January 11, 2021, is an important day for all San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) students and families. It’s the end of Winter Break. It’s the start of a new semester. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity for students and their families to make a 2021 New Year’s resolution to commit to making the most of distance learning by focusing on getting good grades and attending distance learning regularly.

SBCUSD is encouraging students to log in and actively participate in distance learning through the live, online lessons. Students should complete and turn in all assignments, including any outstanding ones from the first semester if the teacher will accept them. Also, be brave enough to ask for extra help when needed.

This is especially important because the grades students earn during distance learning will count toward their final grade and may determine if they are promoted to the next grade level.

“We know the 2020–2021 school year has been very challenging for everyone,” said Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Ana M. Applegate. “Our teachers have had to find new and innovative ways to connect with students and families. Our families have also had to get creative in finding ways to help students stay focused and engaged while in Distance Learning. Our students themselves have shown to be very resilient as they have had to adjust to major changes ranging from learning virtually at home to indoor P.E.”

Applegate suggests families start preparing today for class on Monday. Charge devices, and check that they are working properly. Report any problems with District-provided devices before classes resume by using the online form in English or Spanish or by calling (866) 223-8685. CyberTech technicians are available to help families while schools are closed.

Families can also prepare for a return to the regular Grab ‘N’ Go meal distribution schedule at 25 school sites from 8 to 11 a.m. on January 11, 2021. Families can call the Meal Distribution Hotline at (909) 381-1224 for more information in English and Spanish.

“We applaud all of you for your perseverance and thank you for your patience,” said Applegate. “We can be very proud of our entire organization as we have all learned new ways of teaching and learning, mastering new skills, and providing essential services as we continue moving forward in helping our students continue to become college and career ready.”
