
The San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education unanimously elected Gwendolyn “Gwen” Dowdy-Rodgers as president of the seven-member governing body during its meeting on Tuesday, December 10.
Dowdy-Rodgers, who will serve a two-year term, replaced Abigail Rosales-Medina, whose term as president ended Tuesday and remains a member of the governing body until 2022. In addition, Dr. Scott Wyatt was elected as vice president of the Board.
The Board of Education establishes policy, adopts the District’s annual budget, approves building plans, and considers charter school applications. The Board meets the first and third Tuesday of the month in the newly renamed Dr. Margaret Hill Community Room at the Board of Education building, 777 North F Street in San Bernardino.
Dowdy-Rodgers is a lifetime resident of San Bernardino, a wife and mother, and graduate of San Bernardino High School. She has a Bachelor's of Science in Social Work, a Master’s in Human Resources Management & Management and a 20-year background in finance management. Dowdy-Rodgers is currently employed with EMQ Families First as community development specialist civic/governmental relations where she advocates on behalf of foster youth. She is also the founder of Young Women's Empowerment Foundation (YWE).
Dr. Wyatt is the proud father of two children who have attended District schools since kindergarten. He has been an educator for two decades. During his career, he has been a teacher, lead teacher, ROP coordinator, principal and Area Director of Student Services. He has worked in K–12 Alternative Education programs, Juvenile Court School Programs, ROP/CTE programs, Special Education programs from preschool to adult, and supervised the Toyota Learning Center at the LLUMC Children’s Hospital.
