San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) students who will be attending middle school during the 2022–2023 school year have several options. They may decide to get a high-quality education at their home school, apply for a school transfer, or apply to attend Richardson PREP HI, Rodriguez PREP Academy, or the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program at Chavez Middle School.

Applications for all three schools will only be processed and accepted online at https://www.sbcusd.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=59953&pageId=36516698. The application deadline is December 31, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted.

Students must meet all of the eligibility criteria to apply, which includes, but is not limited to, being enrolled in and living within the SBCUSD school attendance boundaries at the time of the application and during enrollment in the program; maintaining acceptable behavior during the current school year as reported by their school site and as evidenced by no more than two off-campus suspensions; no more than 15 unexcused absences during the current and prior school years; and meeting standardized testing scores. Full eligibility requirements are available at https://www.sbcusd.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=59953&pageId=36516698.

Richardson PREP HI’s award-winning Academic Intervention and Monitoring (AIM) program is a highly individualized academic program that provides interventions to support student achievement, social-emotional growth, and leadership. Richardson offers the Design and Modeling, Robotics, and Tiger TV programs, as well as jazz band, musical theater, guitar, piano, rock band, a fully functional recording studio, percussion ensemble, academic teams, tutoring, and a variety of other enrichment classes..

The instructional program at Rodriguez PREP Academy ensures that all students are held to high expectations and receive rigorous standards-based instruction. Rodriguez PREP Academy School of Engineering and Design provides all students an opportunity to engage in hands-on elective classes where students learn the necessary skills and knowledge required for the workforce of the future, including robotics, coding, plant science, and computer science. Rodriguez also offers visual and performing arts electives and a variety of extra-curricular activities.

Chavez Middle School offers the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program, which showcases a world-renowned education. Students who successfully complete the I.B. Middle Years Program at Chavez will be better prepared to enroll in the I.B. Diploma Program offered at Cajon and Arroyo Valley High Schools. The I.B. Diploma is recognized by colleges and universities across the country and around the world.

Parents of eligible students may submit online applications for their child to participate in the lottery. Admission will be determined by a drawing of all qualified applicants. Once a student’s name is drawn and assigned a lottery number, the student will be placed according to their school preference(s) and space availability. If space is not available at any of their choices, the student will be added to a waitlist. Each student will only be accepted into one school.

The lottery drawing will be held on January 21, 2022, and premier on the District’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/SanBdoCitySchools. The drawing will begin at 5 p.m. for all three schools. Students and parents are not required to tune in during the drawing. Families will receive official letters with their student’s lottery number in February 2022.
