Prolific actor Danny Trejo is the keynote speaker for the 10th Annual New Year Gathering Family Night, scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 6 p.m., at San Gorgonio High School.

Trejo has played El Diablo in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Breacher in The Flash TV series, Johnny-23 in Con Air, Tortuga in Breaking Bad, and many others roles on the big and small screen.

“Danny is a friend,” said Cindra Weber, education assistant IV/Native American Culture and descendant of Lakota nation. “But more importantly, he embodies the idea that it’s never too late to turn your life around, second chances are possible, and no matter where you start in life, you can be successful if you’re willing to put in the work and accept help when it’s offered.”

The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Title VI American Indian Education program presents the New School Year Gathering Family Night as a way to bring together the community to share the rich cultural traditions of Native Americans and inspire Native families to succeed in school and life in ways that honor their ancestors.

Thursday’s New Year Gathering will also feature JR Redwater, an actor and comedian known for the “Goin’ Native” from The American Indian Comedy Slam and Chiefs of Comedy; musician Carlos Reynosa; Hoop Dancer Nanabah, and Fancy Feather Dancer Baac Garcia.

The Gathering is just one in a year-long series of events and activities designed to foster a sense of community and pride among the District’s Native families and educate non-Native families about the rich cultural heritage of Native people. Other events include Family Culture Nights, which sometimes feature hands-on activities, and the American Indian Education Graduation Ceremony.

The free Gathering is from 6 to 8 p.m. at San Gorgonio High School, 2299 Pacific Street in San Bernardino. Parking will be available in the west lot.

The American Indian Education Program’s Family Culture Nights are held on select Thursdays at the Professional Development Center (PDC), 4030 Georgia Blvd. in San Bernardino, 6–8 p.m. Upcoming 2022 dates are September 29 and October 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2022. Everyone is welcome to attend.
