San Bernardino Community Scholarship Association

Scholarship Association LogoThe San Bernardino Community Scholarship Association was founded in 1958 by Elizabeth Dimmock and Elsie Gibbs.  Elizabeth Dimmock served as a Vice Principal at San Bernardino High School and Elsie Gibbs served as the Superintendent of Education of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.  The ladies wanted to enable potential donors to establish scholarships either in memory of a friend or family member to benefit students who attend our high schools.

Over the years the number of donors has grown from ten to sixty-five.  In 1960, the Association was established as a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible organization.  It is governed by a volunteer President, Treasurer, and Board of Directors comprised of community members.  In 1989, the Lyman-Rich Scholarship was established, and the funds of the Association were professionally invested.  This has allowed the Association to award annual scholarships to students at every high school in the district.

The San Bernardino Community Scholarship Association has created a unique platform for donors to give back to their community and provide hope and opportunity for the upcoming generation.  Below are some of the reasons why you should become a donor:

  • You can name the scholarship after your organization.
  • You can name a scholarship in memory of a loved one.
  • You can establish the criteria for the scholarship including the amount, the school, and the type of student you are looking for.
  • You have the option to participate in the interview process either in person or via Zoom.
  • You have the option to present the scholarship at the school scholarship assembly and share why this scholarship is meaningful.
  • New donors can establish an investment account for annual donations in perpetuity or as a one-time scholarship.
  • By donating through the organization, it's 100% tax deductible.
  • You can feel good about helping the students in your community!

If you wish to donate or participate as a volunteer, contact Susan Zavala, Association Secretary, at (909) 381-1250 or [email protected].  If you are a San Bernardino City USD student interested in a San Bernardino Community Scholarship Association scholarship, contact your school’s scholarship counselor.
