Their specialized expertise serves as the foundation for fostering academic achievement, ensuring that students’ physical, mental, and emotional health needs are met with care. By addressing a broad spectrum of health concerns, school nurses play a critical role in removing barriers to learning, enabling students to reach their full potential.
Below are the comprehensive services and responsibilities provided by our district nurses:
Direct Care for Students
- Provides care for injuries, acute illnesses, and long-term management of students with special health care needs.
- Creates emergency plans for conditions such as diabetes or asthma.
- Communicates and collaborates with parents, physicians, and school personnel to ensure seamless care.
- Supports inclusion of students with chronic illnesses or disabilities in regular classrooms as authorized by federal and state laws.
- Conducts vision, hearing, BMI, and other health screenings per district policy.
- Creates plans for responding to emergencies and medical crises.
Liaison Between School, Family, Medical Care, and Community
- Bridges communication among families, healthcare providers, and community resources.
- Serves as the health expert on IEP and 504 teams for educational accommodations.
- Coordinates care to ensure consistent health management.
Promoting Health Education
- Provides health education to students, staff, and families through classes, workshops, and curriculum development.
- Covers topics such as nutrition, exercise, immunizations, mental health, substance abuse prevention, and more.
Ensuring a Healthy School Environment
- Develops and implements systems of care to meet the health needs of the school community.
- Monitors immunizations and communicable disease reporting to ensure a safe school community.
- Implements plans to prevent and address bullying, school violence, disasters, and other emergencies.
- Collaborates with school counselors on suicide prevention strategies.
