The San Bernardino City Unified School District is committed to supporting the emotional well-being and academic success of all students. Our mental health providers play a critical role in ensuring students thrive both inside and outside the classroom by addressing emotional, behavioral, and social challenges.

Mental Health Provider Roles

Advocate for Student Wellness

  • Serve as a compassionate resource for students struggling with mental health concerns.
  • Collaborate with families, school staff, and community organizations to create a supportive network for students.

Intervene in Crises

  • Provide immediate support and interventions for students experiencing emotional or behavioral crises.
  • Assist in developing safety plans and connecting students to appropriate resources.

Educator and Trainer

  • Facilitate workshops, classroom lessons, and training for students and staff on topics like emotional regulation, bullying prevention, and stress management.
  • Promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma through education campaigns.

Mental Health Provider Responsibilities

Assessment and Planning

  • Conduct assessments to identify students’ social-emotional and mental health needs.
  • Develop individualized intervention plans to support academic and personal growth.

Counseling Services

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma.
  • Use evidence-based practices tailored to the unique needs of SBCUSD’s diverse student population.

Collaboration with Families

  • Engage families in the care and support of their children’s mental health.
  • Offer resources, workshops, and referrals to help families navigate challenges.

School Staff Support

  • Work alongside teachers, counselors, and administrators to address classroom behaviors and improve the learning environment.
  • Guide staff in implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies and trauma-informed practices.

Community Partnership Development

  • Build relationships with local mental health providers and community organizations to expand services available to students.
  • Coordinate referrals to ensure continuity of care for students requiring additional support.
