vision services
At San Bernardino City Unified School District, we understand that clear vision is key to unlocking a student’s full potential. The Student Wellness and Support Services department ensures students have access to the screenings, care, and resources they need for healthy vision. By addressing visual health early, we empower students to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Services We Provide
We collaborate with local vision care providers and public health programs to offer:
- Vision Screenings: State-mandated vision screenings are completed at key grade levels to identify potential vision issues early. Screenings are provided by trained professionals and follow California state guidelines.
- Referrals for Comprehensive Eye Exams: For students who require further evaluation, we provide referrals to specialists in the local community.
- Free or Low-Cost Eyewear Assistance: We partner with community organizations to ensure students have access to glasses or contact lenses when needed.
- Vision Health Education: Our team provides educational resources to students, families, and staff about the importance of eye health and tips for maintaining good vision.
Community Resources
We’ve compiled a list of local, state, and national resources to help you access vision care for your child:
- California Vision Services Program: Provides low-cost or free vision services to eligible children.
- EyeCare America: Offers comprehensive eye exams and assistance for children in need.
- Loma Linda University Eye Institute: Comprehensive eye care for children and families.
Vision Screening Requirements
In California, public schools are required to conduct vision screenings for students in kindergarten, first, third grades, and for new students. These screenings aim to detect common issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Together, let’s ensure every student has the clear vision they need to succeed in school and beyond.
