What is the Flu?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms may include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
Most cases are mild, but the flu can lead to severe complications, particularly for young children, elderly individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.
How to Prevent the Flu
Following these tips can help protect your family from the flu:
- Get Vaccinated: The flu vaccine is your best defense against the flu.
- Wash Hands Regularly: Encourage children to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow to prevent spreading germs.
- Stay Home When Sick: If your child feels unwell, keep them home to prevent spreading illness.
Flu Vaccination Clinics
Under California state law, all students must be allowed access to health services, including vaccinations. SBCUSD offers free and low-cost flu vaccination clinics for students and their families.
What to Do If Your Child Has the Flu
If your child shows flu symptoms:
- Keep them at home and inform the school of their absence.
- Ensure they get plenty of rest and fluids.
- Consult your healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or do not improve within 48 hours.
