Internship opportunities

Welcome Future Interns! 🎓
Welcome to the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Graduate Internship Program. We are excited that you’re taking the next step in your journey toward becoming a professional school counselor or social worker.
Our internship program provides graduate students with hands-on, meaningful experience in school settings that foster student wellness, academic success, and personal growth. Through our partnerships with accredited universities, interns gain the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world environments while supporting SBCUSD’s mission to educate and inspire every student to think, to learn, and to succeed.
For Internship Supervisors
If you are a credentialed or licensed professional interested in supervising school counseling or social work interns, please complete the Intern Supervisor Request Form below. This form helps us match placements appropriately and ensure alignment with district and university requirements.
Before You Begin
Please review the information below carefully before applying. These guidelines will help ensure a smooth onboarding process and successful placement:
✏️ Internship placements are limited each term. If you are not selected this cycle, we encourage you to reapply for a future term.
✏️ Your university must have a current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SBCUSD. If your university does not have an active MOU, the process may be delayed while new agreements undergo Board approval.
✏️ In accordance with NASW and ASCA Ethical Standards, SBCUSD does not place interns at the same school where they are currently employed.
✏️ To ensure a meaningful experience and continuity of support for students, interns are expected to be present at their assigned site at least two days per week. Failure to meet this requirement may result in removal from the program.
Internship Pathways
SBCUSD offers two distinct internship opportunities, each designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience while supporting student wellness and success.
School Counseling Internship Program
This program is designed for graduate students pursuing a degree in school counseling. Counseling interns gain experience in academic, career, and social-emotional support services within K–12 schools. Interns work closely with credentialed school counselors to implement comprehensive counseling programs that align with the ASCA National Model and district priorities.
Use the accordion below to review the step-by-step application process, eligibility requirements, and important deadlines for the school counseling internship program.
Social Work Internship Program
This program is open to graduate students enrolled in Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. Social work interns collaborate with district mental health professionals and Student Wellness staff to support students and families through case management, counseling, and community resource coordination—all in alignment with the NASW Code of Ethics.
