Professional Growth Systems
The growth and leadership development programs designed and delivered by the Employee Development Department promote the growth of aspiring, new, and experienced leaders at all levels of the organization. These programs offer opportunities for advancement and include job-embedded, intentional professional development and support grounded in our district’s mission, vision, beliefs, and in the highest standards for the professions. In San Bernardino City Unified School District, the leading expert in human learning, we believe that every person has value and deserves to realize full potential and that employees are SBCUSD’s greatest asset and most valuable resource in improving the lives of children.
Early in 2018, Employee Development embarked upon a collaborative process involving new and experienced principals, vice principals, teacher leaders and directors to articulate a professional growth system and develop an implementation plan for aspiring vice principals and principals. The committee recommendations, arrived at after months of research and collaborative debate and discussion, resulted in the first seeds of the Professional Growth Systems Handbook. What began with a plan to articulate a vision for cultivating teacher leaders and leading vice principals into new principals and vice principals led to a complete re-envisioning of how we develop and grow the capacity of all employees throughout the district. We now have articulated and implemented a leadership growth pathway for all levels of employees in the district-from classified to Principal. What follows in these pages is a description of the systems in place that support the growth and development of Classified and Certificated Employees, Classified Managers, Vice Principals (Aspiring Principals) and Principals in SBCUSD. We have a fundamental belief in investing in the growth and development of our own employees; that all can attain levels of excellence in leadership; that we are “the best at getting better.”
