AB2534 Reference Checks

Assembly Bill (AB) 2534 – Employment and Reference Requirements

Starting January 1, 2025, Assembly Bill (AB) 2534 requires all school districts in California, including San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD), to follow new state laws that promote transparency and accountability in hiring and evaluation practices.

What This Means For Applicants

If you are applying for a certificated position (such as teacher, administrator, or other certificated staff) at SBCUSD, you must provide a complete and accurate record of all prior employment with:

  • Local Education Agencies (LEAs)

  • School Districts

  • County Offices of Education

  • Charter Schools

  • State Special Schools

  • Any other educational institution (regardless of how long you worked there)

As part of the hiring process, SBCUSD will verify your employment history. This includes contacting previous employers to confirm records and to review any credible allegations, investigations, or disciplinary actions involving egregious misconduct (as defined by California Education Code Section 44932).

These requirements ensure every applicant meets state-mandated standards for honesty, safety, and accountability.
