History/Social Science

The Secondary Education History/Social Science Department serves as a liaison to the district’s middle and high schools to provide the most up-to-date information on the 1997 California State Standards, the 2017 California State Framework, and the Common Core Literacy Standards for the Social Sciences. Additionally provided is guidance on the design, implementation, and maintenance of a coherent course of study for each content area.

The focus is to develop an inquiry-based classroom where critical thinking skills are taught to enhance a student’s reading comprehension, expository writing ability, and promote civic engagement with a historical lens. The new emphasis is on conceptual and interdisciplinary practices where students investigate primary and secondary sources to provide evidence and substantiate claims in their writing and speaking.
