DELAC (District English Learner Advisory Committee)

DELAC brings together parent leaders from schools across SBCUSD to advise the district on programs and services for English Learners. Representatives share site priorities, celebrate success stories, and ensure family voices shape districtwide decisions.

Families can:

  • Attend district meetings and learn about program updates.

  • Share feedback on goals, services, and resources.

  • Connect with other multilingual families.

ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee - At Your School Site)

ELAC is a school-based committee where parents partner with principals and staff to support English Learners. Families advise on programs, help assess needs, promote attendance, and elect representatives to DELAC.

Ways to participate:

  • Attend open meetings (translation always provided).

  • Run for an officer role or vote in elections.

  • Share ideas to improve communication and learning supports.

Contact your school to learn more about how you can attend the next ELAC meeting at your child's school.

Enrollment & Language Supports

During enrollment, families complete a Home Language Survey. If a language other than English is spoken at home, students may take an initial English language assessment so we can provide the right supports.

What to know:

  • Required Documents: Immunizations, proof of address, birth certificate, prior records (if available).

  • Program Options: English Learner supports, Dual Immersion programs, and specialized services.

  • Help in Many Languages: Enrollment assistance and interpretation available at all schools.

Contact the Language Assessment Center (LAC) to learn more about our language program options.

Learn More About Being Bilingual & Multilingual

Supporting Your Child at Home

Families play an important role in their child’s success at school. Whether your student is learning English, participating in Dual Immersion, or growing up multilingual, there are many ways to support them at home.

Tips for Families:

  • 📖 Read together every day — in English, your home language, or both.

  • 💬 Encourage conversation — ask your child to tell you about their day, explain what they learned, or retell a story.

  • ✍️ Practice writing and vocabulary — use sentence starters, word banks, or even grocery lists to practice new words.

  • 🌍 Celebrate your home language and culture — share family stories, traditions, and music with your child.

  • Create a study routine — set aside time and a quiet space for homework, projects, and reading.

  • 🤝 Stay connected to the school — attend ELAC or DELAC meetings, check school messages, and reach out to teachers with questions.

Remember: Supporting your child in any language builds confidence, strengthens family bonds, and helps them succeed academically and socially.

Student Services & Special Education

At SBCUSD, we believe every student deserves the tools and care to thrive. Our Student Services Division and Special Education Department work hand-in-hand with schools and families to provide the wraparound supports students need for academic, social, and emotional success.

Student Services offers wellness and counseling programs, attendance and engagement support, after-school enrichment, and specialized programs for unique student needs. These services help ensure that all students—including English Learners and multilingual learners—are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.

Special Education provides individualized instruction, therapies, and accommodations for students with disabilities. Services may include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, adapted physical education, and more. Parents are key partners in this process, with access to interpretation at IEP meetings and opportunities to participate in the Community Advisory Committee (CAC).

Together, these departments ensure access, inclusion, and opportunity for every learner.
