African American Student Success in Math: Grades 4, 5, and 8

Hello! My name is Chidinma kalu and I’m the Math Equity Program Specialist for the department of Equity and Targeted Student Achievement. I am currently working with 14 teachers in 8 schools, consisting of four elementary schools: Barton, Holcomb, Hunt, Warm Springs and 4 middle schools: Arrowview, Golden Valley, King and Paakuma, serving over 200 African American students.
My goal is to support teachers in grades 4, 5, and 8 in creating an equitable, high quality math instruction and culturally responsive instructional practices that meet the needs of African American students. My work with each teacher may include, classroom observations and debriefs, coaching, lesson planning, creating learning tasks, co- teaching, demonstration lessons, and collaboration on best practices that positively impact learning for African American students.
