Parents of Current or Prospective Charter School
Students:
Please read the notice on student admission and academic performance.
The Charter School Operations Department is the liaison between the SBCUSD Board of Education and the 12 charter schools it has authorized. Our duties include: Regular visits to each charter, ensuring that each charter school under its authority complies with all reports required of charter schools by law, and provides timely notification to the CDE if any of the following circumstances occur: 1) A renewal of the charter is granted or denied 2) The charter is revoked 3) The charter school will cease operation for any reason.
For Petitioners
The SBCUSD views charter schools as an educational alternative to the District’s offerings to the students residing within our boundaries.
In order to facilitate the charter petition process, listed below are the various components that must be completed to submit a charter school petition to the SBCUSD:
- Interview with the Director of Charter Schools Operations, prior to submission of the petition
- Letter of Intent signed by the lead petitioner
- Five (5) hard copies of the petition, preferably in binders
- Electronic copy of the petition (Flash drive, CD or email)
- Capacity Interview of the petitioner
After the charter petition is submitted to the Charter School Operations Department, a public hearing will be held within 60 days to determine the level of support for the proposed charter school. After the public hearing, the Board will then have an additional 30 days to vote its approval or denial of the charter petition.
Petitions submitted to the Board must be paginated with clearly identifiable components. The main petition will be labeled Part A; additional documents or appendices will be sequentially labeled Part B, Part C, etc. Once the charter petition has been received by the Board, revisions or additions to the petition will not be accepted. Updates on the petition’s progress or other information requested by petitioners will only be given after approval or denial of the charter petition.
