Field Operations

The SBCUSD Police Department’s Field Operations encompasses Patrol, School Resource Officer (SRO) Program, and our Campus Security Officer (CSO) Program which is the largest section of the department serving a diverse school community through proactive community based policing and programs.

The SRO program is a highly visible and proactive approach strategy in school-based community policing. Our SROs routinely engage students in a manner that fosters healthy relationships, build trust, and provides ongoing intervention and prevention techniques in our schools throughout the district.

The SRO program enables our campus-based officers to work collaboratively with parents, students, staff, administrators and the community to address quality of life concerns, neighborhood violence, and other challenges that can impact a student’s ability to learn.

Our SROs are multifaceted officers that mentor, coach, motivate, and inspire our youth on a regular basis through positive interactions that not only keep them safe but on track to graduation.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department (SBCUSD PD) Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program is an evidence-based, national and international gang and violence prevention program that has been building trust between law enforcement and communities around the nation for more than 25 years.

The SBCUSD Police Department’s “GREAT” Program helps our youth avoid gang membership, prevent youth related violence, criminal activity, and develop a positive relationship with SBCUSD PD and our law enforcement partners.

Through this intervention program youth will experience a change in behavior, attitude, and challenge themselves to be better as they take ownership over their lives and actions.

The program consists of instructors from both the police department and probation department providing instruction in curriculum that spans over 13 lessons covering a wide range of topics in personal development, resiliency, resistance skills, and social relations.

Reserve Officers

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department was the first school police department in the State of California to organize and implement a Reserve Police Officer Program. Presently, the Department has two reserve officers. Reserve officers must be graduates of a POST-certified police academy.

To become a reserve police officer, an individual must apply to the Chief of Police, and pass a comprehensive interview process followed by a polygraph examination and POST background investigation.

Upon completion of the approximately 500+ hours field officer training program, reserve officers will provide law enforcement services to the San Bernardino City Unified School District on a voluntary basis.

Each reserve officer is expected to follow the same policies and procedures as full-time police officers.

Reserve officers are not paid, however, they are provided with the required safety equipment, uniforms, and advanced law enforcement training.

Our reserve police officers serve with pride and perform their duties in the best traditions of the law enforcement profession.

School Resource Officer

Our core responsibility - interact with students, staff, and school administration to ensure, within our resources, to have a safe educational environment. The San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Department provides one School Resource Officer (SRO) to our five comprehensive high schools. Every high school has one Police Officer and seven Campus Security Officers assigned to the high school campuses, with two Campus Security Officers assigned to every middle school campus.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Police Officers assigned to campuses pull double duty, acting as the resident law enforcement official, and regularly participating in self-initiated campus incident and student interaction. This "specialized" policing allows students, staff, administration, and our community another opportunity to understand and appreciate their relationship with those sworn to protect them.

Volunteers

The San Bernardino City School Police Department (SBCUSD PD) Police Volunteer Program uses qualified men and women volunteers for specified job tasks and duties within the Department, which support our mission and vision.

The SBCUSD Police Department volunteers are an important part of our organization and have proven to be a valuable asset to the District, Department, and School-Community. Volunteers help to increase departmental responsiveness, delivery of services and information, input and provide new program opportunities. In addition, our volunteers bring new skills and expertise to the Department and prompt new enthusiasm within our organization.

The SBCUSD Police Volunteers are a motivated group of seniors who are dedicated to making a difference in our schools, community, and positive impact on the lives of our youth.
