Mission Statement
The SBCUSD Board of Education believes that all students
deserve an education that challenges them to meet their fullest
potential. The GATE program provides gifted and talented students
opportunities for learning commensurate with their particular abilities
and talents.
GATE Magnet Program - Grades 4-6
The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Magnet Program provides opportunities for gifted students in grades 4-6 to recognize their full potential and maximize their individual interests and talents. Services are designed to help students learn how to apply their talents both in the classroom as well as in their everyday lives. Students enrolled in GATE magnet classes have participated in the GATE identification process and the teachers are GATE certified.

GATE Magnet Program Sites
GATE Cluster Classes - Grades 4-8
Other elementary and middle schools offer GATE cluster classes consisting of groups of GATE identified students working together within a regular classroom setting. The goal of clustering students with gifts and talents is to allow teachers to differentiate content, process, product, and the learning environment in a manner commensurate with the abilities and talents of advanced learners. Please contact your home school directly for more detailed information regarding site-specific GATE programs.
GATE Identification
All 3rd graders with parent permission participate in GATE testing at their school site in the fall of each school year. Any student who misses the test or is in a grade above 3rd may still be tested by parent request. The student may be tested at the GATE office (call for testing date and time). Students may complete the test for GATE identification no more than once per year.
The GATE identification process typically involves the following measures:
- Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT)
- California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress Scores (CAASPP)
