Sometimes classes don’t align with student interests and sometimes students—especially those trying to get into highly-selective colleges and programs—need to take the initiative to do work above and beyond what their teachers ask or require. Though students can conduct self-study completely on their own, sometimes a mentor can help give guidance and direction as well as valuable feedback.

In addition, many options for self-study exist online, whether learning coding or how to run a small business. Joining or creating a campus club or a community group can also provide opportunities to pursue a personal or academic passion.
