When I arrived in San Bernardino a year ago, one thing that stood out about this community is the philosophy that when it comes to children, we truly are a village.
When families entrust the San Bernardino City Unified School District to educate their children, they join an extended family, where each member does their best to ensure that children thrive. From the recreational
aide supervising the playground, much in the way an auntie or an uncle does at a birthday party, to the school counselor who looks out for the child’s overall well-being, our more than 8,000 employees are
your family, and your children are ours.
That way of thinking is engrained in the fabric of this community and will not fray with the departure of any one leader. If you care about the future of our community, and I know you do, I urge you to stay involved
and to pledge your support for the next leader of the SBCUSD family. |

Memorial Day Holiday
District schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 30, 2022, in observance of Memorial Day. District operations will resume
as normal on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.
Last Week of School and More
Wow, just like that the 2021–2022 school year is drawing to a close. Monday, May 30 is a school holiday, and Tuesday
through Thursday are minimum days for students.
Did you know that the 2022-2023 school year calendar is already online so you can start planning for
the year ahead? And just in case you’re wondering, the first day of school is Monday, August 1, 2022, so save the date.
Special Board Meeting
A Special Board Meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, to share information on budget projections and trends, on-going budget
challenges, the State’s fiscal outlook, and an update on the District’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Dr. Margaret Hill Community Room
at the Board of Education Building.
SANKOFA Signature Program Still Accepting Students for 2022–2023
SANKOFA is an SBCUSD Signature Program that is designed to accelerate the learning
and academic achievement of African-American students using brain-based, rigorous and responsive instruction. SANKOFA is currently offered at Hunt Elementary, Del
Vallejo Middle, and Pacific High Schools. Interested families may enroll children in SANKOFA regardless of a student’s home school as long as they are enrolled in SBCUSD. Students enrolled in other school districts
or charter schools must enroll in SBCUSD first.

(ETSA) at (909) 473-2098 to learn more. You can join the interest list by completing the online form or calling ETSA. Spots are still open at all three schools.
Class of 2022 Graduation Information
If you know a member of the Class of 2022, be sure to high-five them and ask them about the next phase of their educational journey, which truly starts when young people graduate from high school prepared to succeed in
college and the workforce.

- San Andreas High School: Thursday, June 2, 7 p.m., San Manuel Stadium, 280 South E Street, San Bernardino
- San Bernardino High School: Friday, June 3, 10 a.m., San Bernardino Valley College, 701 S. Mt. Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino

Latino History Bee Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the April 2022 Latino History Bee. Middle and high school students competed in three rounds focused
on different aspects of the Latino experience. Round one focused on Latino history. During round two, students identified Latino artwork, including the title, artist, and country of origin. New this year for round three,
students presented a Latino-inspired dance, skit, monologue, or other performance.
The winners of the middle school division (grades 6–8) were:
1st Place—Alani Guzman, Richardson PREP HI Middle School
2nd Place—Sophia Williams, Arrowview Middle School
3rd Place—Katty Camacho, Arrowview Middle School
The winners of the high school division (grades 9–12) were:
1st Place—Elizabeth Bañuelos, Arroyo Valley High School
2nd Place—Crystal Tello, Arroyo Valley High School

Dual Immersion Teacher Guides Young Learners
Muscoy Elementary Dual Immersion Kindergarten Teacher Christina Liera won a 2022 Crystal Apple Award. Christina’s commitment to helping students become biliterate in English and Spanish is evident in her students’
superior test scores. Even during distance learning, she came to the school on her own time and distributed materials and incentives to her students. Her greatest attribute is that she never says an unkind word about anyone.
She supports and collaborates with everyone while quietly leading us all to be better. Thank you, Christina, for Making Hope Happen for students. |

School Volunteers Are Like Family
The dad who takes a day off work to help chaperone a class field trip, the college student reading to a kindergarten class
for community service, the room mother who dutifully makes copies of homework packets each week—the contributions of school volunteers are countless, and SBCUSD recently honored about 100 individuals who selflessly give
their time and talent to make hope happen for students. The District held the annual Volunteer Tea in person earlier this month for the first time in three years.
The event was an opportunity for SBCUSD to acknowledge the volunteers who work behind the scenes to help our schools run efficiently, said Director of Family Engagement Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez. When SBCUSD welcomed students back
for in-person instruction and public health guidelines said it was fine to allow volunteers, District administrators didn’t know what to expect. Gonzalez said, “At first we thought that no one would want to volunteer.
The District is glad to have support from our community partners and volunteers.”
