Family Culture Nights Bring Attention to Native American Traditions and Culture
The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Title VI American
Indian Education program is proud to have been able to bring back Family Culture Nights for the 2021–2022 school year.
Family Culture Nights are geared towards Native American students and their families, but all SBCUSD students and families are invited to attend and learn about Native American culture with hands-on activities.
“Family Culture Nights started as a way to help our Native students connect with their cultural heritage and find pride in their traditions,” said Cindra Weber, an education assistant IV/Native American
Culture and descendant of Lakota nation. “And it’s also an opportunity for everyone in the school community to learn about and appreciate the rich cultural traditions of the Native people of not only this
area but from across the country.”
Family Culture Nights feature free events and hands-on activities on most Thursday nights from 6–8 p.m. at the SBCUSD Professional Development Center (PDC). Upcoming Family Culture Nights are: January 13, 20,
and 27; February 3, 10, 17, and 24; March 3, 10, and 17; April 7, 14, 21, and 28; and May 5 and 12, 2022.

Superintendent Shares Important Safety Message for Students and Families

Dear SBCUSD Families,
The San Bernardino City Unified School District remains committed to protecting the safety of our students and staff and we ask for your support in helping us keep our schools safe and our students thriving.
Recently, we have seen an increase of inappropriate social media activity involving our students and schools. The most concerning include social media hoaxes threatening school violence. Our District Police Department has diligently
investigated each of these fully and determined them to be unfounded. Surrounding school districts are also experiencing similar hoaxes and rumors, some of which are being amplified by worried parents with good intentions sharing
posts on social media and neighborhood groups.
We thank the families and students who have alerted us to these hoaxes and we ask that you speak with children about the severity of making fake threats. We also ask that parents not repost or share these posts and instead notify
authorities immediately. Your District Police Department can be reached 24/7 at (909) 388-6130.
SBCUSD is also working to report and remove multiple Instagram accounts that are publishing inappropriate photos and information about students without their knowledge or permission. Some of these accounts use the school name,
seal, or mascot for legitimacy but are not authorized by our administrators. If you come across inappropriate Instagram accounts, please report them to your child's school and understand that it may take multiple reports
before pages are taken down by social media companies.
Please join us in denouncing harmful, inappropriate, rude or damaging social media activity and consider monitoring your children’s social media accounts to ensure they are not using it inappropriately. I would like to
assure you that our campuses are safe and our staff looks forward to welcoming your children to school each day so we can all focus on teaching and learning.
