Drive-thru Food Distribution
The Pureland Foundation is holding a drive-thru food distribution on Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at Pacific High School. Arrive early because food is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. And, since this event is held the fourth Saturday of every month, be sure to save the dates of future food distributions:
Students, Join Our Virtual Summer Reading & Nutrition Program
Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to join the Virtual Summer Reading & Nutrition Program being offered by the Family Engagement Department in collaboration with the University of California. Virtual sessions are held at various times on Tuesdays through July 27. Students who participate in these 45-minute sessions will improve their reading comprehension while learning about healthy eating, the importance of exercise and other good habits.

Did you know that if you attended an SBCUSD middle or high school, you can submit an online request for your student transcripts using www.parchment.com? On the Parchment website, click on the Order Transcript button. To create a new account, click on the Sign Up button. Be certain to use the name you used when attending SBCUSD. If you already have an account, click the Sign In button. You can access step-by-step instructions and a quick reference guide here.

Board of Education Returns to In-person Meetings
Trustees held the first in-person Board of Education meeting in 16 months on Tuesday, July 6, marking a momentous move from remote meetings that were streamed live to meetings with the public in attendance.
The Board of Education meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Dr. Margaret Hill Community Room, 777 North F Street in San Bernardino. Meeting agendas are available at https://sbcusd.com/board. You can watch meetings live on the District’s YouTube channel here.
State Education Group Honors SBCUSD Transportation Director
San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Transportation Director Marie Espinoza, who has dedicated her career to the safety of students who ride the bus to and from school, has won state recognition for her work.
Today, the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) will honor Espinoza with the Classified Administrator of the Year Award for region six, which includes San Diego, Orange, Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.
Espinoza, who has worked for SBCUSD since 2004, has devoted herself to ensuring that the 9,000 District students who ride the bus have a safe and positive experience. Although students spent the last school year in distance learning, Espinoza adjusted to the unpredictable changes by remaining flexible and hopeful as she transitioned to serving as logistics chief for the COVID Incident Management Team.
“In my environment, change is constant,” Espinoza said. “I am accustomed to embracing change, and I look for different opportunities to improve systems and processes. I get to make a difference in a child's life every day. It may not be known, but I know I make a difference.”

District’s Executive Cabinet Welcomes New Member to the Team
The District’s Executive Cabinet, the team that advises Superintendent Doc Ervin and helps run the daily operations of San Bernardino City Schools, welcomed a new member with the Board of Education’s appointment of Dr. Ricardo Esquivel.
On Tuesday, July 6, trustees named Esquivel assistant superintendent of Equity, Access, and Innovation. Esquivel holds a doctorate degree in education from USC and has held a variety of positions throughout his long educational career, including teaching in Los Angeles and most recently serving as superintendent of the Elk Hills Elementary School District in Kern County.
Also on Tuesday, Board members promoted Dr. Rachel Monárrez from assistant superintendent to Deputy Superintendent.
Until her promotion, Monárrez was the District’s assistant superintendent of Continuous Improvement, a division that focused on ensuring access and services to all students so that they can thrive academically, emotionally, and behaviorally. She joined SBCUSD in August 2016 as the assistant superintendent of Student Services.
In 2020, the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators named Monárrez as the Central Office Administrator of the Year for her distinguished leadership and excellence in advocating on behalf of Latina/Latino/Latinx children.
