Virtual Academy Waitlist
If you missed Sunday’s deadline to select the Virtual Academy for your students for the 2021–2022 school year, you can still add your child to the waitlist.
By completing this form, your student will be placed on a waiting list for the Alternative Learning Options Program. Please note that your child will still be scheduled to begin in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year.
New School Year Begins August 2
Save the date! The first day of school for the 2021-2022 school year is Monday, August 2.
All SBCUSD schools are prepared to welcome students back safely to our campuses, which will be open for a full day of in-person instruction, Monday through Friday, with multiple safeguards in place. Be sure to check directly with your student’s school for specific site information.
Pure Land Food Distribution
Take advantage of the Pure Land Foundation’s free, drive-thru food distribution at Pacific High School on Saturday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, or until supplies last. The mobile food pantry is by drive-thru only. Walk-in service is not available.
This Pure Land mobile food pantry is held at Pacific High the fourth Saturday of the month, so be sure to save the dates.

Summer School is Underway
Thousands of SBCUSD students from elementary to high school began summer school on Monday, June 7.
This is the first time our schools and classrooms served students in person since the statewide closure of schools in March 2020. Some students opted to complete summer school remotely.
Virtual Academy Leaders Named
Congratulations to longtime SBCUSD educator Ken Martinez, newly appointed Principal of the SBCUSD Virtual Academy.
Congratulations also go to Dr. Mary Shelton, named Virtual Academy vice principal. They will lead the new Virtual Academy, which will serve families who opted to keep their students in a virtual learning environment for the 2021-2022 school year.
SBCUSD Now More Prepared for Emergencies
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently approved SBCUSD’s Hazard Mitigation Plan, developed by the District’s Office of Safety and Emergency Management.
A comprehensive Hazard Mitigation Plan is necessary to receive federal mitigation and recovery funding under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance program, and a formal Hazard Mitigation Plan is also an important step in making sure that the District is prepared to support students and families during natural or man-man disasters.
The plan addresses potential hazards ranging from fires to earthquakes and landslides. FEMA praised SBCUSD’s plan for clearly identifying potential hazards and explaining the risks and ways to reduce the impact in the community in a comprehensive, yet concise way.

Having Affordable Home Internet is Vital for Students
Reliable and affordable internet access is crucial for all students, whether they’ll be returning to SBCUSD schools for in-person instruction or have opted to remain in remote learning in our new Virtual Academy.
Several internet service providers offer low-cost, affordable home internet for qualifying low-income households, but you must act fast because assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To qualify for the low-cost home internet offers, applicants can visit the www.everyoneon.org/cetf website and follow these easy steps:
- Provide the zip code for where they live.
- Check the relevant boxes for programs they participate in --- like the National School Lunch Program.
- Select a service provider and sign up for home service.
Families can also call (866) 969-8748 and connect with a local non-profit for assistance in subscribing to an internet offer.
If you have questions, please call toll free, 1-844-841-INFO (4636) to find out if you pre-qualify for an affordable home internet offer. If you qualify the representative will ask a trusted community-based organization to call you back to help you choose an offer.
