SBCUSD is eager to enroll the Class of 2033

The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is eager to enroll the Class of 2033.

Online registration for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in SBCUSD is underway. Classes started August 3, but space is still available and students can begin distance learning as soon as the enrollment process is complete. Children who will be 5 years old by September 1, 2020, are eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2020–2021 school year. Transitional kindergarten (TK) is available for students who will turn 5 years old from September 2 to December 2, 2020.

According to Elementary Instruction Director Tasha Doizan, children benefit from kindergarten in various ways. Since most students only attend for half a day, it provides a chance for children to get used to a school schedule before they are required to attend for a full day. Students are taught a number of skills in kindergarten that are necessary for success in first grade and beyond, including:

* Counting to 100
* Writing numbers 0–20
* Identify shapes (i.e. square, circle, rectangle)
* Basic addition and subtraction
* Learning letter names and sounds

* Writing upper and lower case letters

* Recognizing ending punctuation (i.e. period, question mark, exclamation mark)

“Kindergarten is the foundation for success, ” Doizan said. “They will learn fundamental skills in reading and math that set the stage for future learning in a fun and engaging way.”

San Bernardino City Unified School District parents and guardians may visit the online School Site Locator to determine their child’s home school.

In addition to completing an online enrollment packet, parents and guardians will need photo identification for themselves; proof of address in the form of a current utility bill or affidavit from the property owner; proof of the child’s birthday in the form of a birth certificate, physician or hospital record, baptismal or church certificate, or passport; and the child’s immunization records to register for school. Families will need to upload photos of the required documents.

Children who have some, but not all, of their required vaccinations may still be eligible to enroll so long as required immunizations are completed before physical campuses reopen.
