Mt. Vernon Elementary Celebrates Centennial on March 9

The community is invited to celebrate Mt. Vernon Elementary School’s Centennial on March 9 at 9:30 a.m.
For 100 years, Mt. Vernon Elementary School has served as a place to educate children and create lasting memories and served as a focal point and shared experience for the community.
“Our school is a generational school,” said Lisa Hallberg, Mt. Vernon’s program facilitator. “We have had parents, grandparents and great grandparents of our students who attended our school.”
Many Mt. Vernon staff members have children who attend or previously attended the school. Three of the school’s current staff members, teacher Stacie Black, after-school coordinator Rosa Chavez, and bilingual attendance verifier Vivana Sanchez, are Mt. Vernon alumni.
Hallberg herself has a connection to the school beyond her status as a staff member. Her grandparents, Art and Tillie Salazar, both attended Mt. Vernon in 1926.
Beyond the community ties, Mt. Vernon can also boast that its students’ standardized test scores increased for the 2018–2019 school year.
Mt. Vernon Elementary School is located at 1271 West 10th Street in San Bernardino. All visitors must check in with the front office upon arrival.
