Actor Emilio Rivera is the keynote speaker for the sixth annual New Year Gathering Family Night, scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 at 6 p.m.
Rivera may be best known for his role as Marcus Alvarez in Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C. and for playing Carlos in the movie Con Air with Nicolas Cage.
As a young boy, Rivera’s family moved to an impoverished area of Los Angeles nicknamed Frog Town. Rivera struggled with growing up a minority in a poor neighborhood, but his love of acting pushed him to develop the self-discipline that would lead to his success.
The Gathering will also feature World Champion Native American hoop dancer Terry Goedel, musician Tracy Lee Nelson, and Jacque Nunez. Nunez is known for her Journeys to the Past presentations, which take students on a journey through the lifestyle of Native California Indians before the arrival of the Spanish.
The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Title VI American Indian Education program presents the New School Year Gathering Family Night as a way to bring together the community to share the rich cultural traditions of Native Americans.
The Gathering is just the first in a year-long series of events and activities designed to foster a sense of community and pride among the District’s Native families and educate non-Native families about the rich cultural heritage of Native people.
The Gathering is from 6 to 8 p.m. at San Gorgonio High School, 2299 Pacific Street in San Bernardino. Parking will be available in the west lot.
The American Indian Education Program’s Family Culture Nights are held on select Tuesdays at the Professional Development Center (PDC), 4030 Georgia Blvd. in San Bernardino, 6–8 p.m. The remaining 2019 dates are October 8 and 22, November 12, and December 10.
