About the District

San Bernardino City Unified School District, the 7th largest in the state of California, serves 47,000 students in a diverse and culturally rich community located within Southern California’s  Inland Empire. Our District is home to award-winning schools, educators, programs and students, including one National Blue Ribbon School, seven California Gold Ribbon Schools, two model Continuation High Schools, and a dozen CSBA Golden Bell winning programs.

SBCUSD includes 50 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, a K-8 school, 9 high schools, an adult education center and a K-12 virtual academy within its nearly $1 billion annual budget. The District also operates a state preschool program at 40 sites across the district, manages a robust extended learning program at all schools, and oversees 14 charter schools. 

SBCUSD’s workforce is 8,000 strong including approximately 3,000 Certificated, 2,500 Classified, 300 management employees and a 2,000 member pool of guest teachers and substitute employees. Our District operates a police department that includes a team of 29 sworn officers and 58 campus security officers (CSOs). We value professional development and have established robust internal systems of leadership development, staff training, and mentoring to strengthen the impact of our people. 

SBCUSD proudly offers students opportunities through a number of specialized programs including Dual and Triple Language Immersion, International Baccalaureate, Linked Learning Certified Career Pathways, Sankofa, Visual and Performing Arts, academic and athletic teams. A focus on wellness provides resources to support student success with integrated Social-Emotional Learning, and access to healthcare and mental health services through schools. Strong community partnerships augment the District’s offerings to provide opportunities and support for students.

About the Community

SBCUSD, is an urban District that encompasses 110 square miles including most of the City of San Bernardino, parts of the City of Highland and unincorporated communities in San Bernardino County like Muscoy and Devore. More than 265,000 people live within the boundaries of the District which are nestled at the foot of the majestic San Bernardino mountains where the 10, 15, 210, and 215 Interstates converge.

San Bernardino is home to both a California State University and a California Community College. It is located in close proximity to world renowned Loma Linda University and the University of California Riverside. SBCUSD partners with all of these higher education institutions for student matriculation, workforce development, and community service programs.  The community is known for its transportation and logistics industries with an airport, rail service and numerous warehousing facilities. It is also the County seat where municipal, statewide, national level and international government operations converge. 

Because of its location, San Bernardino enjoys a temperate climate where outdoor recreation including youth sports leagues, golf, swimming, paragliding sites community parks, and local hiking trails are available year round.  From here surfing, skiing, and world class golf courses are within an hours drive. The City of Highland is also home to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, which operates a resort casino, promotes Native American culture and gives generously to support the local community.
