988 - Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

The current Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, even after 988 is launched nationally.

WHAT TO REPORT:
  • Suicide Threats, Cutting or other Self-harm
  • Individuals who Display Mood Disorders like Depression, Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Disorder
  • Persons who Display Disorders such as Alcoholism or Substance Abuse
  • Individuals who display a sense of Hopelessness, a feeling of Isolation, and Impulsive or Aggressive Tendencies

  • Call the tipline: Dial '988'. The previous lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255 or 1-800-273-TALK) is also available (Toll-free nationwide-24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
  • Use the website:  988lifeline.org/ (Access Lifeline Chat (Web Chat feature))
