Common Core Standards

The Common Core Standards for mathematics are designed to prepare students for college and career readiness in the 21st Century. In the elementary grades, the standards are divided into two categories: the eight Standards for Mathematical Practices and grade level content standards.

The Standards for Mathematical Practices are best described as “habits of the mind” or ways students think about and engage with mathematics. These standards incorporate ways that students communicate their mathematical thinking and articulate

The content standards are organized in three ways:

  • Domains – these are large groupings of major mathematical topic areas.
  • Clusters – big ideas that group together related standards within the domains.
  • Standards – explicit statements that define what students need to understand and be able to do at each grade level.  The standards balance conceptual understanding, procedural skill and problem solving in context.

Ongoing professional development will provide teachers with foundational understanding of the Common Core State Standards.
