SANKOFA: Students Acquiring New Knowledge Optimizing Future Accomplishments
The SANKOFA model of instruction is a researched-based approach to teaching that integrates aspects of culture and language into the teaching and learning process. SANKOFA creates learning environments that affirm and value students’ cultural backgrounds to create connections that promote academic excellence. This instructional model utilizes culturally relevant teaching practices that emphasize the value of all cultures, with a focus on the culture and learning styles of African American and other culturally diverse learners. This approach has been proven to increase academic achievement and promotes closing the “excellence” gap.
Students in these classes are taught the same Common Core State Standards using district and state-approved curriculum. SANKOFA classes are open to all students, meeting entry criteria, particularly those students who would benefit from deliberate instructional approaches that support inductive learning in an interactive and collaborative learning environment.
