Proficiency Level Descriptors

A proficiency level descriptor (PLD) is a definition of the achievement expectations, academic behaviors, skills and knowledge for students by grade level for each essential standard.   PLDs also identify students’ proficiency levels as they progress toward mastery of each standard (Below Basic, Basic, Proficient and Advanced).

As standards are covered in the classroom, proficiency level descriptors assist in defining what steps in learning progressions of the standards students achieve and can be used to monitor student progress when used in conjunction with assessments. They also assist with grade level collaborations in targeting student support.

It is very important to remember that teachers are charged to teach all of the grade level standards and not just those with Proficiency Level Descriptors.
